Join us for our first ever VIRTUAL Day at Dumbarton! The theme of our May 13-May 14 program is “cultural landscapes” and the way in which human influence has shaped the landscape in various ways through the centuries. Although we cannot be together in person, Day at Dumbarton 2020 will be an enriching and enthralling program and we hope you’ll join us!
We will have 6 wonderful events for you to attend including lectures, question and answer sessions, and a craft that will be mailed directly to you.

Wednesday, May 13th 2020
11:00 AM EST to 12:00 PM ET Introductory Lecture: Whether you've never been to Dumbarton House before or you have visited many times, this Introductory Lecture will welcome you to the Home of the Dames. Join us for an introduction to the museum and grounds that constitute your National Headquarters and see how we fit into the national story of the creation of Washington DC!
1:00 PM EST to 2:00 PM ET Speaker Peter Waddell: Tudor Place Artist-in-Residence Peter Waddell will discuss the human impact on the landscape of Washington, DC. Peter specializes in history and architectural painting and worked with Dumbarton House to paint a recreation of the historical view from our Best Chamber window.
3:00 PM EST to 4:00 PM ET Speaker Chris Strand: Director Garden & Estate at Winterthur Museum, Chris Strand, will speak to the preservation of Winterthur’s extensive historical gardens and landscape, focused on the idea that Winterthur is a cultural landscape and that the evolution of the property can help to tell a story about the du Pont family and about America.

11:00 AM EST to 12:00 PM ET Cultural landscapes at Dumbarton House: Explore how cultural landscapes are depicted in many of Dumbarton House’s very own collection of Federal Period paintings and decorative arts.
1:00 PM EST to 2:00 PM ET Lecture by Don Hawkins: A historical cartographer and expert on L’Enfant’s plan for Washington DC, Don Hawkins, will give a talk about the changing visions that created the National Mall.
3:00 PM EST to 4:00 PM ET Cross Stitch at Home Craft: Public Programs Manager, Mary Lesher, will lead participants through a cross stitch activity, using a design she created herself that was based on botanical paintings in Dumbarton House’s own collection. All materials, including the fabric, needle, embroidery floss, instructions, and a pattern, will be sent to your home before the program if you purchase a ticket for this activity.
